Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Because of the breathing interruptions during sleep, patients affected by sleep apnea may awake with a gasp during the night. Other common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:

  • Snoring, especially with pauses in breathing
  • Insomnia
  • Excessive daytime drowsiness (hypersomnia)
  • TMJ disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Fragmented, non-refreshing sleep
  • Clouded memory and difficulty concentrating
  • Decreased sex drive and impotence
  • Morning headaches
  • Irritability and personality changes
  • Depression, anxiety and mood changes
  • Gasping or choking during the night
  • History of stroke or high blood pressure
  • Restless sleep and frequent nighttime urination
  • Falling asleep while driving, working or reading
  • A sore throat when waking

If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, you may have sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea can cause or contribute to a number of medical problems as well as lifestyle risks, so if you or a loved one believe you may have sleep apnea, we recommend that you seek a diagnosis as quickly as possible. After being diagnosed, you will work with our doctor and your physician to design a treatment plan and help you get the rest you need.
